[Class 96] Bundles of fibres in paper pulp of high consistency, e.g. 10-14 per cent are broken up by continuously circulating the pulp in a vat &c. and through a passageway wherein it is subjected whilst substantially unconfined, to high speed rotary blades. The pulp circulates about a midfeather in the vat, the bottoms of the channels of which are inclined to aid circulation, the inlet part passing over and across the outlet part. The outlet 17 contains blades 28 rotated, e.g. at a mile per minute peripheral speed, by a motor 30 which may be reversed to clear stoppages &c. The blades 28 are inclined to avoid clogging, and to assist in propelling the pulp past further propeller blades 33 in a tapering compartment 32 supplying a pipe 19 at the inlet to the vat, and a conical refiner having a baffle 56 at its inlet. The blades of the plug and shell of the refiner are volute in opposite directions, and the plug may be hydraulically adjusted axially of the shell, during operation, a piston 51 acting on a bearing housing 49. The output from the refiner passes off at 53 or may be returned to the vat for further treatment. Part of the pulp returned may go directly to the outlet of the vat. The apparatus may function for bleaching, or de-inking the pulp with the aid of chemical additions.
