Abstract
621,581. Heating liquids in bulk. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 16,1946, No. 24418. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1939. [Class 64(iii)] A heat exchanger installed within a reservoir for the purpose of heating a viscous fluid during its withdrawal therefrom comprises a bank of heating elements disposed at or near the bottom of the reservoir and arranged for the lateral flow of the liquid into the bank over at least a major part of the distance between the viscous liquid outlet from the bank and an end of the bank remote therefrom. In the form shown, the bank 1 comprises a number of hairpin tubes of small diameter expanded into a tube plate 4. The tube bank is housed in a casing 2 disposed within the reservoir 3 which contains the viscous liquid to be heated during withdrawal. The part 14 of the casing is semi-cylindrical in cross-section, the remaining parts 11, 12, 13 being cylindrical with the .parts 11, 12 outside the reservoir of larger diameter than those portions of the casing lying within the reservoir. The tubes are more widely spaced around the upper region of the tube bank and at the bottom of the bank a number of tubes are omitted to leave a longitudinal space through which the viscous liquid flows to the outlet 8 after flowing laterally through the bank. The steam head 5 is provided with a steam inlet 6 and an outlet 7 for condensate and is partitioned to divide the inlets to the tubes into groups to provide a circuitous path for the steam. The tube plate 4 may have stiffening ribs.
