[Class 61(ii)] To repair a broken belt, a clamp, Fig. 1, is attached transversely to the belt near each end, the clamps being drawn together by means of a tightening device attached to a ring 14 on each of the upper clamp members 1. When a pull i s exerted on the clamp in the direction of the arrow A, Fig. 4, the portions 3 and 6 on the upper and lower clamp members 1 and 4 are brought nearer together to increase the bending of the belt 15 between the jaws and prevent slip. Each clamp member comprises flat bars 3 and 6 of equal width and thickness welded to the flat plates 2 and 5 respectively, the plate 5 being wider than the plate 2 to allow for lateral movement. At each end a U-shaped bracket 9 is welded at 10 to the edges of the plate 5, an inwardly-extending lug being provided for a clamping screw 12. In a modification, Fig. 7, the clamp members 43, 44 comprise plates shaped so as to have two relatively offset portions joined by an inclined portion, the bracket 40 being detachable and having a projecting lug 45 shaped to fit the underside of the member 44. In another modification, Fig. 9, the bracket 55 is pivoted to the lower clamp member, a pivot pin 57 passing through the arms of the bracket and through a pair of blocks 58 welded to the underside of the clamp member 52. A transverse catch bar 59 slidable in guides 60 is spring-urged into engagement under the projections 61 on the arms of the bracket by a catch rod 63 slidable in blocks 64, 65 and provided with a thumb piece 66.
