Abstract
619,610. Pillows, mattresses, &c. FLEET, C. B. Dec. 16, 1946, No. 37007. [Class 52 (iv)] A bed, pillow, mattress, or the like has its interior divided by both longitudinal and lateral partitions into cells or compartments filled with feathers or other stuffing. In manufacture the partitions 4, 4a are secured, upstandingly, to the bottom covering material and the cells thus formed are uniformly filled with feathers or the like after which the top covering material is secured to the partitions 4, 4a and finally the border material and piping 2' are secured in place. The partitions are preferably secured to flanges 3, 3a formed on the top and bottom covering material and one method of forming the flanges comprises making folds in the material and stitching the folds some short distance from the edge of the fold. Having formed the flanges 3 to obtain the flanges 3a parts of the flanges 3 are cut out at the appropriate points and transverse folds formed and stitched. After a row of cells or compartments has been filled the flanges 3, 3a of the top covering are stitched to the tops of the partitions 4, 4a and the process repeated at the next row. The flanges 3, 3a may however comprise separate strips stitched to the top and bottom covers. In another form, separate and complete cushions may be juxtaposed and enclosed in the top, bottom and side covers.
