Bedding article and method for its manufacture. The present invention relates to an article of bedding, such as a mattress, an eye ler, or a similar article and, in particular, an article of this type of the t # -pe to comparti- separate inents containing filling material.
This compartmentalized construction is particularly advantageous in cases where the filler material is feather, but it has heretofore been difficult or expensive to manufacture. article to compartments presenting main faces to which are roughly flat or free from hollows or indentations due to of ,,; nozzles.
In the article which is the subject of the present invention, said compartments are limited by vertical dividing partitions fixed to edges which extend inwardly to < / B> from a wrapping material which constitutes the top and bottom walls of the article.
According to the method of manufacture which the invention also adopts, flanges are formed in said wrapping material which extend towards the interior of the article and which are respectively arranged longitudinal and transversely. partitions are fixed to said i-edges of the part of this enveloping material which is intended to form one of the main faces of Fartiele,
so to obtain several juxtaposed and separate corner-partinients open upwards, these compartments are then filled with filling material, these compartments are closed with the part of the material wrapping def # finished to for mer the other of the main faces -of the article, and said edges of, this part of the wrapping material are fixed to said partitions.
The drawing illustrates, to by way of example, two embodiments of the method according to the invention and represents two embodiments of the article according to the invention. 'invention.
Fig. 1 represents the plan view of a mattress constituting a first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view with partial section of a portion of a mattress during manufacture.
The fic. 3 is a section showing part of the top wall of the mattress.
The lig. 4 is a similar view showing the formation of the partitions dividing the compartments.
Fig. 5 is -a longitudinal section, to larger scale, # of a -complete mattress, taken along line V-V in fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a cross section, to on a larger scale, along line VI-VI of fig. 1.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are detail perspective views intended to show the structure of the upper and lower walls of a mattress , as well as the manner of forming flanges extending inwardly from from these walls, Figs. 10, 11, 12 and 13 are key similar views relating to to. a variant execution.
The, fig. 14 is a perspective view showing a provision applicable to a case of a pillow which constitutes a deLi -, iènie embodiment.
In the drawing and more especially in fig. 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 desiO11W the juxtaposed compartments, has number (the nine in the example shown in fig. 1. It is c obvious that one can modify the number of compartments according to the dimension of the piece of furniture for which the article is intended. The reference numeral 2 designates the bead of orientation, which, in accordance with common practice, it extends along the upper and lower edges of the mattress.
In manufacture, all of the 1 compartments are formed on the fabric forming the the bottom; we sew the fabric intended to to form the top to the side wall of one of the ends called mattress, then we first fill the compartments located to < / B> this end of the mattress and the woven fabric is sewn to the parts of the longitudinal side walls and of the longitudinal partitions 4 and a.tLx first transverse partitions 4a limiting these compartments.
The next transverse row of compartments is then filled and the fabric is sewn to the wall and partition portions as well as to the second transverse partitions 4a, so as to close these compartments. The last transverse row of compartments is finally filled and the top fabric is matched to the corresponding wall-, and partition sections and to the side wall of the other #> xtrend of the mattress to complete the structure thereof.
Fig. 2 shows part of the fi-. 1 mattress as it is after having closed the first transverse row of compartments.
The bead 2 is applied all around the upper and lower edges of the mattress. We see that each. the compartments 1 thus form a separate and closed compartment containing its own quantity of feathers or any other filling material which cannot escape.
It is (so that the outer surfaces which form the bottom and the bottom of the mattress are to, roughly flat, (I so that the filled compartments each exhibit the maximum thickness of the mattress. This result is obtained by sparing (the edges 3 which s # eiAeiit towards the interior from from the fabric forming the top and the under of the mattress.
These flanges, can be formed by folding the fabric J forming the top and bottom (lu illatelas, el], making illie coliture to til eer- size distance (from preferably at about 1.2 iiim) from the fold line, then folding the fabric back along this seam. Fig. 3 clearly shows how to proceed, the fold line being indicated in -11 and the seam in _12.
Fig. 4 shows how the partitions 4 are attached to the edges 3 by sewing along a line near the edge called edge 3, as the see in 5. If Particle lie must present partitions only in one direction (for example longitudinally), as is the case with small pillows or cushions,] a formation ledges 3 binds presented no difficulty.
However, to manufacture a mattress such as that described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, it is necessary to have transverse partitions 4a, perpendicular to the longitudinal partitions 4, and this requires the formation of re edges' a for fixing these partitions 4a above and below the mattress.
Figs. 7, S and 9 show how we can form such a set of ledges 3 and 3. After having formed (the longi tudinal edges 3, oit unclip a key part these at the places where they have to cross the re transverse edges as indicated in fig. 8, and the fabric carrying the edges 3 is laid out flat , then folded transversely,
and he sews the fabric transversely at the ninth key distance from the new line (the folding has previously been done (for example there twelve niiJliniètre # ,,), so to form a structure such as that shown to in fig. 9. Partitions 4 and 4a, are then sewn to the edges 3 ) and 3a, as indicated in fi. 4, 5 and 6, in order to form separate compartments.
Thanks to à this interior eloisoiiiienient, even when a seam breaks , feathers or any other filling material does not escape of,]. * inside the mattress.
lees fig. 10 to 13 represent another way of forming rims 3 and 3a, a way which has the advantage of greater simplicity. The first phase of this training is indicated in in fig. 10, in which it can be seen that instead of using the folding method indicated in fig. 7, 8 and 9, the rim is simply constituted by a strip of of fabric sewn to the interior of the enveloping fabric,
along a line 6. When this strip is folded the along its seam line, so that it is in a constant plane dicular to the so-called cover fabric, for example a 3 rim is obtained.
A the place where a rim 3a must intersect with the rim 3, the latter is cut out in the manner shown in in fig. 1.1, in order to obtain edges 3 and 3a perpendicular, as indicated to in fig. 12, to which we can fix partitions 4 and 4a, as shown to in fig. 13. However, it is obvious CI that instead of using a single length of strip to form the edge 3 and #de décoa - for this one at the places where it crosses a rim 3a,
we can form the rim 3 by means of a certain number of more emirts elements separated by intervals so that the rims 3a, perpendicular, can pass.
For the manufacture of a pillow or a cushion, the edges intended for the fixing of the vertical partitions can be formed in only one direction, either longitudinally or transversely, of the perpendicular partitions. to these edges are not necessary. This construction is shown schematically in in fig. 14, in which the re edges 3b follow the desired curvature of the cushion, while the partitions 4a are cut out according to the faith-nie one wishes to give to the cross section of this cushion.
Regardless of the construction of the compartmentalized article, the closing sides of wrapping fabric, the end walls and the cushions or passes. -hairs are all applied, in a known manner and not presenting any difficulty for a specialist experienced in the manufacture of mattresses.
The aids described above allow the use of different filling materials and the described process allows the manufacture of lightweight mattresses and bedspreads with down filling which can also be used as foot covers, if desired, except. when they are attached to -a box spring.
