<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
'serrée mais non collée, ou fixée autrement aux éléments en papier.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans le dernier procédé de fabrication décrits on doit donner aux cotés du couvercle et à ceux des parois toute la hauteur de la boîte afin d'obtenir une forme définitive acceptable;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO STRONG PAPER BOXES"
The present invention relates to strong paper bundles for the retail sale of dried fruits, confectionery, and other dry products; it relates in particular to boots of the kind in which the bottom, sides and top of stiff paper are assembled together but not secured and are interconnected in their respective position by means of a substantially flexible envelope, film or blanket-forming fabric fits
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
'tight but not glued, or otherwise secured to the paper parts.
The bundles made according to this principle are economical for the user, since the sheets of paper and those of the envelopes cut and ready can be kept flat during transport and storage. , hence the minimum bulk, and it is possible, in packaging operations, to assemble and assemble the boots with the greatest ease by folding these sheets.
In a known arrangement of this type of paper box, a sheet of wrapper made of fabric, gauze, strong flexible paper, cellophane, or other similar thin substance, is stretched flat under one of the bottoms of the box. , gathered while going up and applied on the sides of box boot; its edges are folded over and laid flat on the top of the boot, and the whole is fixed by means of a paper or gummed closure piece placed on the converging edges of the envelope sheet.
We also established the body of boots, as well as the lids, based on a similar principle, by assembling walls and bases in strong paper without fixing them together, surrounding them with a sheet of envelope, folding towards the bottom. 'inside the edges of this sheet on the walls, ¯introducing a base attached to the body or the cover thus formed so as to flatten and stretch the surround of the sheet against the inside face of the walls and to hide its edges under the reported background, '
In this arrangement, the cover must be given a diameter greater than that of the body so as to be able to slide it above this body.
One of the aims of the invention is to modify the known manufacturing processes so as to make it practical to obtain lids having dimensions identical to those of the bodies in order to facilitate the manufacture of these.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
two elements in the same presses, with the walls and paper ends of identical dimensions, and flexible envelope sheets of reduced dimensions for the bodies *
In the last manufacturing process described, the sides of the cover and those of the walls must be given the full height of the box in order to obtain an acceptable final shape;
the envelope sheets must, therefore, have a sufficient surface to cover not only the inner faces of the walls, but they must also make it possible to form an underside between the real bottoms and the added bottoms of the bodies and the covers. The body fits completely into the lid, and the opening of the box becomes difficult because no part of the body can be grasped to proceed with the separation; if the cover is made shorter than the body so that part of the latter is released so that the body can be more easily grasped while the cover is being lifted, an extra thickness unpleasant appears on the walls in the place where the lid covers the walls of the body.
The invention aims to reduce the area covered by the envelope sheets; these sheets represent the most expensive part of the whole, since in most cases a material such as silk, cellophane, or expensive paper is used in order to give the object a good appearance. ' finished.
For this purpose, as well as for other purposes envisaged by the invention, the height of the walls of the box as well as that of the height of the cover respectively, each have half the height of the box, and a wall inserted in cardboard having the total height of the box, is introduced by force into the body. This added wall is extended in the form of an entrance above the side of the body covered by the casing and receives the cover.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ole which, being identical, in terms of dimensions and shape, to the body of the box is assembled slides on the entry provided on this added wall. When the cover has been put in place on a body thus formed, its walls are at the same external level as those of the body thus established, presenting a clean butt joint.
The raised body wall sufficiently fixes the casing sheet of that body as long as this sheet has a sufficient surface area to leave a flange flipping over the edge of the body wall; it does not need to have the desired dimensions to cover the inside of the walls of the box as well as to come below the added bottom.
Other advantages and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description which will be given thereof with reference to the appended drawing showing, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the lids
FIG. 4 is a series of views of elements of the cover comprising the envelope sheet F, the top G, the walls .4 and the added wall K.
A thin cloth of silk or the like, parchment paper or a synthetic substance such as cellophane is used as the envelope sheets. Whatever substance is used, it must, after it has been creased, folded and applied strongly, lie flat and tight against the cardboard frame, and it must have sufficient strength to bind the cardboard parts together. as well as to maintain the shape and the whole of the frame. The rigidity of the boot is given by the meeting between them of the strong paper elements, and its holding by the envelope sheet.
When this sheet is made of transparent material, the printing on the cardboard walls or funds is visible through the envelope
We can give the boxes seen in plan any practical form; they can have three, four or a greater number of sides, or else be round or oval, so as to meet any particular request, and a window can be provided in one of the funds, or in both in order to to allow the contents to be seen through the stretched flat part of the envelope sheet if the latter is transparent
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The elements of the frame other than the wrapper sheet are made of cardboard or the like of suitable stiffness taking into account the dimensions and shape of the box.
These elements consist, for the box by a bottom E, a continuous wall C with tongues 14 disposed at its lower edge, a continuous side trim 13 provided or not with tongues 15 at its lower edge and, at will, an attached bottom A; the elements of the cover are constituted by a bottom G, a continuous wall H with tabs 17 at its upper edge, and an added bottom K.
The strong paper elements forming the walls of the body and the cover are notched on one edge and folded between the notches to form the tabs 14 and 17. These tabs are bent at right angles to rest against the respective bottoms and G. is lying; when the elements are assembled, they are caught between the respective bases E and G and the added bases A and K When these parts are folded in the plan form of the body and the box covers, they are brought together. at their ends in contact either by means of a strip 11 glued to the end joint, or by fixing them @u by means of the device to the slot and tongue shown at 10 (FIG. 2) on a lap joint.
The lateral lining B of the body of the boot is appreciably higher than the walls C so as to obtain an interlocking joint receiving the cover of FIG. 3 on the body of FIG. 1. The lining is established in the same way as the wall but, if desired, it is not necessary to provide it with tabs similar to those of the wall.
To facilitate the assembly of the elements, a fairly high shaping block is used, having in plan the internal dimensions and the shape of the box. Boot-shaped interior measurements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
When making a box body, the envelope sheet is first placed on a table symmetrically to an opening made in this table and having in plan the shape and the external dimensions of the finished box; the bottom E is placed on the sheet D so that it corresponds with the opening of the table.
A strip of cardboard is then notched on one of its edges and its ends are brought and fixed abut by means of a strip of solid thin paper glued to the joint. The length of this strip corresponds to the contour of the wall of the box and the notches are given the desired shape and spacing from the plan shape of the box to allow the strip to adapt to that shape. As a result, the notches, in the case of a cylindrical boot are V-shaped, in large number and tight in order to facilitate the bending to form a ring; in the oas of a rectangular boot, there are four right angle notches symmetrically arranged one at each corner.
It is possible, if desired, to connect the ends of this strip to each other by a lap joint with a waist and tongue, as shown at 10, but the butt joint covered with glued paper is preferred. With the ends connected, the band became a ring.
The tongues of this ring formed between the notches are folded inwards, and the valve is lowered onto the shaping block, the tongues folded back below this block. The block is then pushed into the opening of the table so that it drives the envelope sheet with the boot base that it is wearing This block has, in plan, a shape corresponding to that of the opening and to that of the box, but the opening of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
table is a little larger than the block so as to leave the necessary play for the thickness of the strip as well as that of the part of the envelope sheet folded over this strip.
The part of this sheet which is not located directly above the opening of the table, is subsequently raised, folded and clamped flat around the walls 0 formed by the strip. The shaping bloo is extracted, and the vertical edges 12 of the sheet are folded inwards on the edge of the wall C.
The side trim is then introduced into the body and finally the added base is pushed into place; , by this operation, the part 12 of the envelope sheet folded inwards is clamped downwards and pressed flat against the inner face of the wall 0 of the boot and firmly gripped between this wall 0 and the lining lateral B; the tabs folded inwards!% of the lower edge of the side trim to are hidden between the attached base and the main base E. The built-in base A is inserted after the side trim has been pushed back into place B, so that it supports this lining, pressing its bottom against the walls ± of the box.
The envelope sheet is only given the dimensions necessary so that its rim can be folded over the edge of the wall, as shown at 12 (fig. 2), so that it is effectively fixed between the inner face of the wall. the C wall and the face

responders of the body. By .côntre, one does not, use, side. Trim, and the envelope sheet is larger than that used for the body. It is sufficient that
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the latter is long enough to leave an ample fold 12 on the edge of the wall, but the cover trim 13 must be large enough to line the walls g of the cover and to line the underside of the added base K.
The envelope sheet of the cover being placed on the opening of the table bearing the bottom G, at the desired location to correspond to the opening located below; the block carrying the wall g is pushed back with its tabs 17 folded inwards, introducing the whole assembly through this opening, thus bringing the envelope sheet upwards and applying it to the outside of the wall. The block is removed and the vertical edges 13 of this sheet are folded inside over the wall g of the cover with its edges 13x applied to the inside face of the bottom G.
We then push back the added bottom! in the cover so that it drives; stretch and apply the fold 13 of the sheet F on the inside face of the wall of the cover and that it clamps its edges 13x between the bottom G and the added bottom K.
This cover thus established can be slid over the vertical part 20 of the side trim, µ until the edge of the cover comes into contact with the edge of the wall of the body. A good-looking butt joint is thus obtained.
The cover made in the manner described is made according to one of the known methods and, in itself, therefore does not form part of the invention, but cannot be used in conjunction with a body. with the same dimensions built in the same way.
In the box or container according to the invention, it can be used with a boot body of the same dimensions.
In current practice, it is necessary to establish the cover to sufficient dimensions so that it can slide back over the body and, consequently, one
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
is in the presence of conditions presenting drawbacks. In the boxes * according to the invention, it is possible to use an envelope sheet with a surface smaller than that previously necessary to make a body of any given shape and size, and the introduction of the side trim makes it possible to con - making a boot with a sliding cover of a given capacity with body and cover walls each only half the height required in the case of boots made in accordance with current procedures.
The saving which is thus effected on the price of the envelope is in practice of great importance since this envelope is the most expensive element of the assembly. The practical advantages of grasping the body while holding the cover, and of obtaining a seal without protrusion at the point where the edge of the cover comes into contact with that of the body, makes the boxes according to the invention more convenient than those established according to already known methods.
