This invention relates to bed clothing and more especially to bed sheets of a type sometimes referred to as crib sheets. It is an object of this invention to provide a bed sheet so formed that it can be fitted onto a mattress in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally dislodged from the mattress, either at the ends thereof or at the sides, and this is accomplished by turning down the sides and ends and securing the same together to provide a bed sheet having side portions and end portions covering the sides and ends of the mattress and also extending underneath the sides and ends of the mattress and covering the marginal portions of the bottom surface of the mattress to thereby make it practically impossible for the sheet to become dislodged from the mattress due to restlessness of the sleeper. It also provides a smooth surface at all times for the sheet in that it is stretched over the mattress and confined against lateral or longitudinal movement relative to the mattress.

It is another object of this invention to provide a bed sheet formed from a single sheet of cloth by cutting away the four corner portions of the blank along straight lines diverging from each other and gradually increasing the anguiarity of the straight lines as they progress from the apex of the corner portion outwardly to the marginal portions of the sheet thus forming end panels and side panels, and then seaming the ends of the side panels of the sheet to the ends of the end panels of the sheet along the angularly disposed straight lines to thus provide a sheet which can be easily installed upon a mattress and which is not susceptible to accidental removal as to any portion thereof. This results in no waste of material.

Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank cut and ready for a sewing operation;

Figure 2 is an isometric view showing one end of one of the side panels and one end of one of the end panels sewed together with a suitable binding strip and showing the corner portion turned inside out;

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the binding strip along the edges of the end and side panels in addition .to the binding strip at the junction point of the end and side panels;

Figure 4 is an enlarged isometric View looking down on the inside of one corner of the bed sheet and showing the inner or wrong side of the same;

Figure 5 isan isometric view looking at the bottom of the bed sheet in the form it would appear as when installed on a mattress,

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral indicates a'sheet of cloth from which a bed sheet or crib sheet is to be made, and this sheet of cloth is cut away at its four corners as illustrated such as by cutting a straight line I and then another straight line |2 forming an obtuse angle on the lower side of the lines II and I2 at their junction point, and then cutting along the line l3 forming another obtuse angle on the lower side at the junction points of lines l2 and I3, and then cutting another straight line I4 joined to the line l3 by another obtuse angle on its lower side. The line I5 is then out similar to line I, then line I6 is out, which is similar to line l2, and then the blank is out along the line I! which is identical to line I3, and finally'the blank is out along the line l8 to join the inner end of line H. Since all four corners are identical, like reference characters will apply to the four corners.

After the corner portions are cut away, it provides

30 and 3| to cover the sides of the mattress and end panels 32' and 33 which cover the two ends of the mattress.

With the blank cut in the form shown in Figure 1, the lines l4, I3, l2 and are seamed to the edges |8, IT, IS and I5, respectively, by a line of stitches 20 and in order to take up as little fabric as possible and yet provide a strong junction between the side and end panels, a binding strip 2| is sewed over these proximate edges by th line of stitches 20 which also penetrates the proximate edges of th side and end panels. This binding strip 2| is so disposed as to be on the wrong side of the fabric or the inside of the finished bed sheet. After the four corners have been thus sewed togetherythe edges of the side and end panels have applied thereto a binding strip 22 by a line of stitches 23 which also passes over the binding strip 2| for the corner structure, and thus the bed sheet is completed.

All that appears at the four corners is a junction line indicated at 26, as the binding strip 2| is disposed on the inside of the completed bed or crib sheet.

It might be added by explanation that, instead of cutting two straight lines of the proper angularity for the corner structures, each corner structure represents four straight lines disposed at an obtuse angle with relation to each other and gradually diverging away from each other as they progress from the apex indicated at A to the outer edges of the end and side panels, which is done for the reason that a. mattress does'not have square corners like a box,but the upper and lower edges of the corners are rounded and thus it is necessary to cut the corner portions as indicated by a series of straight lines gradually diverging. away from each other as they progress from the apex or their'junction'point outwardly to the outer edges'of the blank so that when seamed together, they will provide a proper form fitting pocket at the junction of lines M and I8 and also. at the junction of the lines I I and I5.

In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferredembodiment .oftheinvention, and although specific terms are 'employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes oflimita tion, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.

I claim:

1. A cover for enveloping one face and the opposite sides and ends of a mattress, the coverbeing formed from a rectangular blank of cloth and. including, a central panel and side and end panels, the side and end panels being connected together at the four corners of the cover by seams located one at each of the corners and which join the opposite edges of an indentation which has been formed at such corner of the rectangular blank, the indentation at each corner being formed by cutting away the material to provide a pair of similar outlines diverging from an acute angle at the inner end of the indentation and arranged symmetrically on opposite sides of the axis bisecting the angleof such indentation and providing pairs of short diverging lines, the lines of each pair being arranged on opposite sides of the axis and the divergence of the lines of the respective pairs increases progressively from such angle to the end. of the indentation.

5.
