Abstract

619,307. Making heat-exchangers and tubes. HEAT EXCHANGERS, Ltd., and RUDORFF, D. W. Dec. 2, 1946, No. 35625. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XIII] Uniting by fusion.-Relates to tubes for apparatus for effecting the exchange of heat between fluids and consists in a heat-exchange tube formed from a plurality of metal strips each bent to form a segment of a tube wall having two fins integral with the segment so that when the strips are assembled the fins extend longitudinally of the tube, one fin projecting into the bore and the other fin projecting outwardly from the tube. Two strips are bent to have a segmental portion 1 and longitudinal marginal portions bent back on themselves along folds 2, 3 to form two-ply fins 4, 5. The strips are placed together with the roots of the fin 4 of one strip in proximity to the fin 5 of the other strip and the channels between the strips are then filled with weld metal 6. Instead of sharp folds 2, 3, the marginal portions may be bent on a radius giving the fins a bulbous edge. The tubes may be constructed as multiple tube units, the external fins of a tube being integral with or secured to the fins of adjacent tubes. A multiple tube unit is described built of strips bent into an elongated S-shape, the straight part of the S constituting the common external fin of two tubes, while the loops are joined to the loops of two similar strips to form two tubes, the longitudinal margins of each strip being bent to form inwardly projecting fins. The fins may be longitudinally corrugated to increase the rigidity and the heat transfer surface. It is stated that the heat transfer surface may also be increased by transverse corrugations or by dimples.
