619,210. Making brakes. BURGESS, A. F. (Wellman Co., S. K.). Nov. 27, 1946, No. 35179. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Rolling; powder metallurgy.-A T-section vehicle brake shoe is made by rolling a compound, flat strip 2, having one sintered surface 3, into curved form, with the sintered face convex, and welding an arcuate web 4 to the concave face thereof. The strip comprises a steel backing 2, copper or nickel-plated to .0002 inch, with a moulded, pressed briquette sintered thereon at 1500‹ F. and 100 lb. per sq. inch pressure. The briquette comprises 3 to 12 per cent molybdenum sulphide and an example contains 8 per cent tin; 4 per cent iron; 5 per cent lead; 3 per cent silica; 5 per cent carbon; 8 per cent molybdenum sulphide and 67 per cent copper by weight, and is suitable for high speed vehicles. A composition containing no molybdenum is suitable for low braking speeds, and is sintered at 1450‹ F. The sintered surface may be # inch thick, and the backing “ inch thick, and the curving is done by rolls which progressively elongate the sintered surface as disclosed in Specification 595,920. The web 4 may be a stamping, with holes for pivots, operating members, etc.
