Abstract
1460592 Resistance sinter bonding GIRLING Ltd 9 May 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 41403/73 Heading C7D [Also in Division F2] A friction disc for a vehicle disc brake comprises a metal (mild steel) backing plate 11 which carries friction pads 12 which are provided by resistance heating powder compacts of friction material at the required positions on the backing plate 11 to sinter the compacts and to bond the pads 12 to the backing plate 11. The friction material may have the following composition by weight: 60% copper, 12% tin, 2% lead, 9% zinc, 4% carbon and 13% silica. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 the friction pads 13 are of rectangular form and each friction pad 13 on one major surface of the plate 11 is aligned with a respective pad on the opposite surface. A brazing material such as copper, brass, bronze, tin, a tin/zinc alloy, zinc or nickel is plated on to plate 11 prior to the resistance heating operation which utilizes one or more pairs of electrodes contacting aligned compacts on either side of the plate 11. An initial heating and pressing-operation may first be performed to form the lower melting point alloys in the friction material - alternatively the friction material could be composed of such alloys. Figs. 3-5 (not shown) show other arrangements of the pads, those of Figs. 3 and 4 utilizing recesses in the plate. Grooves may be subsequently cut into the surfaces of the pads.
