Abstract
619,098. Grinding-wheels. MONEY, G. T: Nov. 20, 1946, No. 34351. [Class 60] A grinding-wheel, particularly suitable for grinding thin steel in the manufacture of razor blades, and having a medium surface which is neither hard enough to glaze and burn nor soft enough to be cut by the edge produced on the steel, has the abrasive bonded with rubber, resinous or other material unaffected by the coolant liquid used during wet grinding, the wheel containing a quantity of other hard but non-abrasive particles d of graded size which are soluble in said liquid, solution by said liquid taking place at the point of grinding contact, which automatically exposes a line of soluble particles, thereby weakening the wheel to a limited depth (determined by the size of said added particles) and to such a degree (determined by the quantity of said added particles) that disintegration of the contact face proceeds at a predetermined rate, leaving a cutting face of the desired hardness yet weak enough to crumble away under the normal pressure applied to the wheel in operation. The particles may comprise borax crystals when the coolant liquid is water; the soluble particles are coarser than the abrasive particles, e.g. 60 mesh and 500-600 mesh respectively.
