Abstract
619,042. Gantry cranes. ALDINGTON, R. F. P. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23914. [Class 78 (iv)] The bridge part of a gantry crane is supported by a pair of towers, each of which comprises a cylinder having a piston or ram, whereby the bridge may be raised and lowered by supply to and discharge from the cylinders of liquid under pressure. In the embodiment shown, the bridge 1 is supported by rams 2, 3 of cylinders 9, 10 which are mounted on trucks 11, 12. To raise the bridge, water from tanks 16 is forced into the cylinders by pumps on the trucks operated from the truck driving units 15. This water is allowed to flow back into the tanks to lower the bridge by manually operating valves controlling outlet ports from the cylinders. The pistons each have a flange 4 slidable along grooves in the sides of the bridge, whereby the towers may be adjusted along the bridge. Each tower may comprise two or more cylinders which are mounted on a turntable on each truck so that the truck can move about the axis of the turntable to permit steering when the gantry is being transported from place to place. The crane may be supported on selfpropelled floats or pontoons.
