Abstract

[Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In a load handling device of the kind comprising a jib pivotally mounted at one end on a vehicle and carrying a load at its other end, the jib is formed in two parts, one part being pivotally mounted on the vehicle and the second or loadsupporting part being pivotally mounted on the free end of the first part, the means for raising the jib acting on the first part and the load-supporting part being so controlled that it automatically pivots about the first part as the latter is raised or lowered, whereby its loadsupporting end can be brought down to or below the level of the vehicle. In the embodiment shown, the rear part A<SP>2</SP> of the jib is pivoted at b on a balance box B on a vehicle C and the load-supporting part A<SP>1</SP> is pivotally mounted at a on the part A<SP>2</SP> and connected to a pivot b2 on the box B by a rod E connected to a crank lever D bolted to the part A<SP>1</SP>. The jib is raised by one or more rams C<SP>1</SP> acting on a secondary jib A pivotally mounted at b<SP>1</SP> and haying a roller a<SP>1</SP> engaging a surface a<SP>2</SP> on the part A<SP>2</SP> of the main jib. During this movement, the part A<SP>1</SP> is pivoted about a through the rod E until the parts A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> are substantially in alignment. When the main jib is lowered, the part A<SP>1</SP> pivots about the part A<SP>2</SP> so that when the latter has reached its lowest position, the free end of the part A<SP>1</SP> is level with the ground or in a trench below the ground. In this lower position, the device may be used as an excavator or bulldozer by attaching a suitable implement to the end of part A<SP>1</SP>, the latter being tapered to receive a socket on the implement.
