[Class 20(iv)] [Also in Group V] A centrifugally cast hollow beam, for use in building floors, walls or partitions, has two opposite, flat, parallel faces a and two other opposite faces having recesses c and transverse longitudinally-spaced ribs b. Tensioned reinforcing wires k are positioned in recesses formed in longitudinal ribs. These ribs need not necessarily lie in the meridian plane. The wires k are tensioned after the concrete has set and are anchored at their ends by metal plates on end faces of the beam. The recesses in which they are positioned may be filled with mortar. The tubular part of the beam may be helically reinforced. When used for walls, the beams are arranged horizontally, and the hollows may be filled with earth or sand to provide heat or sound insulation. Buttresses are provided at regular intervals along each beam, for reresisting transverse stresses set up by reinforcing members t, which hold the beams together when arranged laterally. The buttresses may have interengaging parts on adjacent end faces. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also modifications in which the intermediate spaces between the beams are filled in with either slabs d, Fig. 3, (Cancelled) or a covering element e carried on an auxiliary support, or with ceramic members f, Fig. 5. (Cancelled). The beams may be polished and may be formed with rabbets for doors or windows. Juxtaposed beams may be used as a pipe for water, domestic refuse, ventilating air or smoke, or as a sewer, or as a casing for electric wires or counterweights of lifts or gates. The beams may be made of metal, asbestos, concrete or plastic material. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
