Abstract

618,322. Electrodeposition of nickel. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. Oct. 16, 1946, Nos. 30850 and 30851. Convention dates, Oct. 25, 1945, and Dec. 3, 1945. [Class 41] In the electrodeposition of nickel on a nickel surface, e.g. a nickel starting sheet or a previous nickel plating, good bonding is promoted by preliminary treatment of the surface in an aqueous acid bath containing at least 9 grams/ litre of chloride ions, e.g. in the form of sodium chloride, and from 0.5 to 30 and preferably from 2 to 10 grams/litre of cupric ions, e.g. in the form of copper sulphate. Hydrochloric acid of from 50-200 grams/litre may be used both to render the bath acidic and to provide the chloride ions. Sulphuric acid may be used to render the bath acidic. The nickel surface may be simply immersed in the bath from 5 to 10 minutes, the bath having from 30 to 36 grams/litre of chloride ion and being continuously agitated as by blowing compressed air therethrough to maintain the copper in the cupric state. Alternatively, the nickel surface may be made anode in the bath with current density of at least 5 amps./ft.<2> for at least two minutes. The nickel surface after treatment is rinsed in water and. the deposition effected before the formation thereon of any passive film. The anodic treatment may be interrupted from time to time and compressed air blown through the bath during the interrupting to redissolve the sponge copper deposited at the cathode. The bath used in the anodic treatment is preferably treated for the recovery of nickel when the nickel concentration reaches 50 grams/litre.
