Abstract
617,783. Axle arrangements. JACKSON, S. W. May 30, 1946, No. 16428. [Class 108 (ii)] A vehicle axle of the kind which does not ,incorporate driving means comprises a plurality of transverse members 3, arranged side by side in spaced parallel relationship and connected together at their ends to form a compound beam, which is supported as a unit from the chassis by spring means disposed inwardly of the end members and attached separately to the transverse members. The preferably tubular beams 3 are connected by shackles 9 to the vehicle springs 8 and are held parallel to one another by end fittings 4. A detachable stub axle 5 is bolted by its base plate 5a to each end fitting, the bolts, if desired, being surrounded by sleeves which take the shear load. The end fittings may be drilled with several sets of holes to allow the attachment of the stub axles at different heights. The Provisional Specification describes also a modification in which each spring, instead of being directly attached to the beams, is secured to longitudinally spaced projections as the corresponding end fitting. In such a case, a single axle beam may be employed.
