Abstract
617,715. Motor-vehicle substructures. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and ISSIGONIS, A. A. Oct. 23, 1946, No. 31441. [Class 108 (i)] The transference of the loads on two forwardly extending engine supporting girders of a motor vehicle substructure to the offset side sills and floor plate which form the chassis, is improved by mounting on the engine supporting girders, a transverse bridge-like structure which is firmly secured also to the dash-panel, toeboard and front wheel arches. The chassis of the vehicle comprises a sheet metal floor plate 1, stiffened by shallow depressions 2, extending between box-section sill members 3, which are connected also by a transverse member 4 having an opening 5 for the transmission shaft. Two forwardly extending girders 6 and 7 have their rear ends secured to the member 4, their forward ends braced by a further transverse member 9 and their flanges 8 welded to the underside of the floor plate 1. Rearwardly sloping plates 10 welded to the girders 6 and 7 support, in conjunction with the toe-plate 11, a box-section transverse member 12, which is also welded to the dash-panel 15 and to the front wheel arches 14. The plates 10 have forward horizontal extensions 13 which are welded to the flanges 8 of girders 6 and 7 and also to wheel arches 14. The parts of the girders 6 and 7, extending between the plates 10 and toe-plate 11 and not covered either by the floor plate 1 or the extensions 13 of the plates 10, are enclosed by top casings 16.
