Abstract

617,560. Making rings. CROSS, R. C., and CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. Oct. 7, 1946, No. 29865. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Coiling ; reeling.-In making piston rings &c. by coiling a hot wire on a mandrel and severing means is provided for supporting a mass of hot wire for delivery to the mandrel. Motordriven gearing 11 rotates a spindle 6 driving a mandrel 9 supported on a centre 10. A crosshead 16 pressed by fluid cylinders 12 carries rolls 18 for centring the mandrel and rolls 19 for guiding the wire. A spool 28 with wire 30 is heated by gas burners 25 in a cover 29 and the heated wire is drawn through a slit 31. The spool or the cross-head may be moved axially. In a modification, the spool 28 is heated before being inserted into the machine. Specifications 535,496, 550,817 and 588,337 are referred to.
