Abstract

An alloy steel has the following composition: Ni 3.0-10.0 per cent, Cr 1.5-3.5 per cent, Mn 2.0-6.0 per cent, C 0.8-1.8 per cent, Fe, together with impurities and incidental constituents forming the balance added in accordance with common steel-making practice. The composition within the above range is so adjusted that the sum of the Ni content, the Cr content and twice the Mn content is from 11-21 per cent. The incidental constituents and impurities may include 0.1-1.0 per cent or more of Si and small amounts of S, P and elements used to deoxidize the steel. The alloy may be used to form articles which need to be tough and hard, made by casting the alloy with or without cold working.
