[Class 39 (iii)] Apparatus for waving hair by successively producing high frequency electromagnetic fields about curlers on which the hair is wound, and which constitute or are associated with metal elements, of a high permeability magnetic alloy into which high frequency currents can be induced, comprises an insulating annular barrel 10 having an open end for receiving a shorter wound curler, a hand grip 11, and a trigger or switch 12, 13, controlling the current to an inductor coil 14a, 14b housed in the barrel, the leads being taken to the centre of the coil as shown. The coil is surrounded by a copper foil screen 50, the overlapping ends of which are separated by insulation and connected across a pilot lamp 51 which is energised by currents induced in the screen. The barrel has a part 40 of reduced diameter extending into a chamber 41 communicating with the atmosphere via a vent 42, to allow the escape of steam and water of condensation. For external heating of the hair, the barrel has a longitudinally split metal sleeve of a high permeability magnetic alloy on its inner face. The curler may have a similar metal alloy core and a split sheath of a similar alloy, and the core or sleeve or both may be carried by the gun. The barrel is preferably spring mounted in the hand grip so that the circuit is only closed when the barrel.is pressed up against a pad on the scalp at the root of the hair tress.
