Abstract

1376136 Hair curling L'OREAL 11 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 52433/71 Heading A4V [Also in Divisions A5, H3-5] A process for the treatment of fibres e.g. artificial fibres or human hair, comprises placing them in a cavity resonator formed by a curling iron, curler or hair drying hood which has been matched both to the generator and to the transmission line from the generator. As shown in Fig. 2 a hair curler comprises a two part separable casing one part of which consists of a perforated metal end wall 4 secured to an insulating cylinder 3 on which hair 12 is wound and the other part of which consists of perforated metal cylinder 6 and perforated end wall 7. In this embodiment matching is achieved by a coupling component 10 in the form of a coil which is connected to the central conductor and outer screen of a coaxial cable 13. The natural frequency of the casing resonator formed by the two part casing is reduced to correspond to that of the generator by means of a helical conductor 9 wound on cylinder 3 and secured at one end 9b only to the casing. Alternatively coil 9 need not be connected to the casing or it may be connected at one or more spaced points. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the matching coupling is in the form of rectilinear conductor connected to the central conductor of the coaxial cable. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the matching coupling is in the form of an antenna connected to the core of the coaxial cable. To compensate for the decrease in dielectric loss factor of hair as it dries a cylinder of a material whose dielectric loss factor and constant increase with temperature is provided around insulating cylinder 3. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the device is in the form of a curling iron, the conductive envelope comprising two pivoted half shells which may be opened and closed by means of levers. In Figs. 8, 9, 10 (not shown) the device comprises a central core which forms the coupling component, a roller on which the hair is wound and which can optionally incorporate frequency matching means and a two part pivoted conductive shell. The coupling component comprises two coils connected to the central conductor of the coaxial cable and via a by-pass condenser to earth. Various chemical and heat treatment processes are described in detail.
