[Class 35] [Also in Group VI] A surgical metal extractor comprising a hollow elongated casing 10 closed at both ends and containing a soft magnetically permeable metal core 20 surrounded by a wire coil 22, is characterised in that the core extends through the closure at one end and has a socket 20<1> formed therein into which the grooved inner end 31 of a magnetically permeable blade 29 is fitted and retained in freely rotatable position by a spring pressed ball 33 mounted in the casing which also carries switch means for the coil circuit. The switch means may comprise a leaf spring 23 connected to one lead of the cable 13, operated by a push button 25 to contact a metal band 26 surrounding the coil end connected to one end of it, the other coil end being connected to the other electric lead. The core may be of soft iron, and the casing, the end closures, and the core support '21 of insulating material. The blades may be plated, e.g. with chromium, may have a variety of shapes and are easily fitted and axially adjusted. The current may be 60 cycles A.C., which vibrates the foreign matter, or D.C. The instrument while light and handy, may have 8 ozs. lifting power.
