Abstract

569,631. Electrically heated hair waving apparatus. WARREN, S. F. July 31, 1943, No. 12462. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A high-frequency generator 1 is coupled to a coil 2 adjacent to heating devices 3, 31 which are used for hair waving. Each device comprises a coil 4, condenser 5, thermal switch 6, and fuse 7, the circuit being energised by radiation from the coil 2, and. preferably tuned to the frequency of the generator.. The heating device comprises a semi-tubular member 8 with two side members 9,. 10. carried by arms 11, 12, hinged at 13 and having finger. grips 14, 15 whereby the members 9, 10 may, be opened to receive a tress of hair. The condenser 5 is formed by electrolytically depositing a layer 29 of silver in a cavity, covering it with a dielectric 31, and adding a further deposited layer or metal foil 32. The thermal switch is contained in a cavity 35 and comprises two flexible conductors 39, 40 carrying contacts 41, 42, mounted on an insulating strip 37. An insulating spigot 45 carried by the conductor 40 is actuated by a bimetallic strip 46 supported, with axial compression, between notches 47, 48 so that it moves with a snap action. In an alternative form, the bimetallic strip 54, carries one contact 52 and a flexible strip. 50 carries the other contact 51. Snap action is caused by magnetised pieces 55, 56. The heating coil 4 is contained in an annular cavity in the member 8. The thermal device may vary the tuning of the heating circuit, instead of opening the circuit.
