Abstract
1422557 Thermal switches EXEC (PTY) Ltd and AE & CI Ltd 17 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2517/73 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] A time delay device includes conductors 14, 16, and 26 fusible metal 24 and means 10 in series with conductor 14, 16 for heating metal 24 so that after a predetermined time it melts and electrically connects conductors 14, 16, and 26. Means 10 is a resistor escapsulated in an insulating compound 12, e.g. an epoxy resin, in cylinder 14 which is supported by insulators 22 in cylinder 26 encapsulated in thermal and electrical insulating material. Cylinders 14, 26 are of metal, e.g. brass, aluminium and copper. Metal 24 may be Wood's metal, with flux 27 on its free surface to improve its flow properties when molten. Resistor 10 has leads 16, 20, lead 16 being also connected to closed end 18 of cylinder 14 so that circuit is made between lead 16 and lead 28 connected to cylinder 26. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), contact is made between an outer cylinder 30 and a central core comprising a resistor lead 33 when resistor 31 melts annular fusible metal 34 spaced from resistor 31 axially by spacing washer 40. The device is used for sequentially firing detonator fuse heads 50, 52, 54, Fig. 3 (not shown) (see Division H2).
