Abstract

615,759. Thread - advancing devices. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. July 19, 1946, No. 21632. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1945. [Class 120(ii)] Apparatus for handling continuous strands of filamentary material comprises a thread storage, thread-advancing reel &c. which may be of the general kind set forth in Specifications 584,950, 587,949, 587,976 and a rotatable member 25 adjacent the discharge end of the reel &c., said member being separate from the strand-carrying elements of the reel &c. and having a periphery for receiving the strand and for winding it thereabout, and being driven at a peripheral speed approximately equal to that of the reel &c. and in a contrary or in the same direction, whereby the yarn strip extending between the reel 2, 3 &c. and the member 25 may easily be picked up by the operative. The member 25 is driven about a stationary shaft 4 from the reel through clutch surfaces 5a, 14 and gear train 11, 16, 17, 18, the clutch being urged into engagement by a spring 24, but may be disengaged and held inoperative by a pivoted lever 32 and catch 36, 37. A stationary hood 31 protects the parts therein. In a modification, as applied to a reel construction similar to that of Figs. 5 and 6 of Specification 587,949, the drive from the clutch surfaces to the member 25 is through a bevel gear train.
