Abstract

615,722. Aerial coupling arrangements. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WILLOUGHBY, E. O. Aug. 10, 1945, No. 20646. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vii)] An aerial coupling arrangement comprises a coiled transmission line substantially an integral number of wavelengths long at the operating frequency inductively coupled to the aerial. The transmission line 5, Fig. 1, is coupled to the quarter-wave aerial 1 and ground 2 by means of the coiled line 3 which is brought to exact resonance by a series condenser 4. The condenser 4, may comprise a spherical knob or anti-corona device, and may alternatively be connected across the junction of the line 5 and the coil 3, the remote end of the coil 3 being grounded. The length of the line 3 may be made an exact quarter-wave and the condenser 4 omitted, or may be a whole multiple with alternate quarter-wavelengths wound in reverse sense. The aerial 1 and ground 2 may comprise the wing and fuselage respectively of an aircraft, the coil 3 being arranged in the plane of the wing 1 and housed in an insulating casing. The arrangement may also be applied to half-wave aerials (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). A vertical mast aerial 10, Fig. 4, supported by the insulator 11 and guy-wires 12 is energized from the transmission line 15 by means of the series-connected coils 13 located opposite the centre of the aerial 10 and supported by the wires 12, and which together comprise a whole wavelength. Radiation from the upper parts of the coils 13 is limited by adjustment of the inclination of the guy-wires 12. Specification 515,853 is referred to.
