Abstract

615,495. Making boxes. DEHN, S. G. (Waldorf Paper Products Co.). July 12, 1946, No. 20934. [Class 18] A box is pressed from a precut blank, the four sides 10, 12, 24, 25 being folded up and interlocked in one operation on a former B. The blank A is placed between adjustable guides 44 with the base 11 midway between a pair of forming blocks 50. A plunger 64 presses the blank between the forming blocks 50, the chamfered edges 55 of which fold up the sides 12, 10 together with a lid flap 13 attached to the side 12 and flaps 35, 37 extending from the side 10. Simultaneously surfaces 62 of arms 61 adjustably attached to the blocks 50, fold up the sides 24, 25 and sweep inwardly extensions 26, 27, 29, 30 of the sides 10, 12. Tabs on each of these extensions engage in slits 31, 32 in the sides 24, 25, the slits 31, 32 being opened partly by members 63, which also assist in folding the by members 63, which also assist in folding the sides 24, 25, and partly by the distortion due to the forming operation. The forming blocks 50 with their arms 61 are arranged to pivot inwardly on leaf springs 47 under pressure of the plunger 64. This and the trapezoidal form of the sides 24, 25 enables the sides 10, 12 to be folded inwardly past the vertical to ensure the correct locking of the tabs in slits 31, 32. The plunger 64 has a base area less than that of the carton and a leaf spring 66 is attached to the base of the plunger to press the folds 14, 15 of the blank when the spring 66 flattens under pressure. As the plunger 64 rises, the leaf springs 47, 66 return to their normal positions, the box sides 10, 12 open out at right angles to the base 11 and the plunger 64 is withdrawn. The lid 13 may be closed after filling the box, flaps 41, 42, 17 being folded at right angles to the lid and the narrowed ends of flaps 41, 42 being engaged in the slits 31, 32, and a tab 20 on the flap 17 engaging in a slit 21 in the side 10. The flaps 35, 37 fold under the lid 13. The blank, prior to pressing may be covered with a moisture proof sheet 38 which forms a liner for the box and lid.
