Abstract

615,255. Bearings. JAMESON AERO ENGINES, Ltd., and JAMESON, J. L. May 3, 1946, No. 13506. [Class 12 (i)] A reduction-gear drive for a propeller shaft is supported adjacent the reduction gear by a bearing positioned in a housing by a locking pin or pins, which extend through the housing and between the planes defining the width of the bearing ring so that they are accessible from outside. A propeller shaft 1 is supported by front and rear bearings 2, 3 carried by an extension 5 of the engine crank-case 51, the crank-shaft 6 having a pinion 7 in mesh with a gear ring 8 formed on a flange extension of a back plate 9 at the rear end of the shaft 1. The outer race of the rear bearing 3 is constituted by the inner peripheral surface of a ring 10, the outer surface of which screws into a bore in an internal flange 12 on the extension 5. The ring is then secured by a number of radial locking pins 13 which pass through the flange 12 and screw into the ring, the heads 14 of the pins resting on the outside of the extension 5. The inner race 15 for the bearing 3 is provided by the shaft 1. The back plate 9 can thus be arranged close to the bearing 3 since there are no internal nuts or bolts to avoid. Screws or bolts merely bearing on the screwthread of the bearing ring 10 may replace the locking pins. The front bearing 2 is of any usual arrangement.
