Abstract

951,813. Toothed gearing. N.S.U. MOTORENWERKE A.G., and WANKEL G.m.b.H. June 28, 1961 [June 29, 1960], No. 23385/61. Heading F2Q. In a rotary mechanism, e.g. a rotary combustion engine, of the kind comprising an outer body formed symmetrically with respect to a central axis on which there is journalled a shaft having an eccentric portion carrying a rotor which rotates about an eccentric axis .thereon, gearing is provided between the rotor and the outer body comprising an internally toothed gear secured to the rotor coaxial with the axis of rotation of the latter, and an externally toothed gear which is fixed with respect to the outer body and is located within the eccentric portion in mesh with the internally toothed gear. Where the mechanism is a combustion engine either the outer body or the shaft may be stationary, the drive being taken from the shaft or outer body respectively. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 2, the body is a two-lobed epitrochoid formed by a peripheral wall 3 and end walls 1, 2. On the central axis a shaft 7 is journalled in bearings 5, 6, the shaft having an eccentric portion 8 on which is journalled in turn a generally triangular rotor composed of two parts 9a, 9b between which is located an internally toothed gear 14, the assembly being secured together by bolts 20. The gear 14 is in mesh with an externally toothed gear 13 secured to a spindle 16 which is in turn secured in a suitable manner (not shown) to the outer body. The eccentric portion 8 is provided with a recess 15 to accommodate the gear 13 and bearing sleeves 18, 19 for the spindle 16. The ratio of the gearing 14, 13 is 3: 2 so that the rotor rotates one third of a revolution for each rotation of the shaft 7 (or the body if the shaft 7 is fixed). In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, the externally toothed gear 13<SP>1</SP> is formed integrally with a lip 22 of the end wall 2 so that the shaft 7 need not be hollow. The eccentric portion 8<SP>1</SP> is formed in two parts secured together by bolts 23 to provide a space to accommodate the internally toothed gear 14<SP>1</SP>. Bearings 26, 25 are provided for supporting the two parts of the eccentric portion on the lip 22 and another lip 21 of the end wall 1, respectively. In a third embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the lip 21 and bearing 25 are omitted, the shaft 7 being made thicker at the end provided with the unsupported part of the eccentric portion. Specification 926,801 is referred to.
