Abstract
1,008,784. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. March 4, 1964 [March 9, 1963], No. 22368/65. Divided out of 1,008,549. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the trochoidal n and n+1 lobe type the planetary motion of the piston 5 (Fig. 2) is controlled by gearing comprising a pinion 10 fixed to an end wall of the engine housing 1 concentrically with a power-output shaft 3 and in mesh with an internally-toothed gear-wheel 11 fixed to an end face of the piston, and fluctations in inertia torque acting on the piston (Fig. 1, not shown) are reduced by appropriate variations in the tooth-pitch of the pinion around the pitch circle, the pitch being reduced in a region b (Fig. 3) and increased in a region d to produce corresponding retardation and acceleration of the piston, respectively. In regions a, c of the pinion the pitch is normal, the variations in the pitch around the pinion being gradual (Fig. 4, not shown). The configuration of the inner peripheral surface 2 of the housing may be modified in accordance with said variations; and friction torque may be increased to neutralize inertia torque acting in the direction of rotation 4 by suitable increments in the spring-loading of radial sealing strips 12 at the corners of the piston.
