Abstract

975,839. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. H. SABET. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 3, 1961; Dec. 14, 1961], No. 4036/62. Heading F1F. A rotary piston internal combustion engine of the geared vane type comprises a pair of vanes A, Figs. 3, 4 rotating at uniform speed and a pair of vanes B rotating at non-uniform speed to vary the volumes of the chambers between the vanes such that combustion gases sucked in through a port Y are compressed, ignited by a spark-plug Z expanded and then exhausted through a port X twice during each revolution. An additional outlet port may be provided between outlet port X and plug Z through which spent gases may be discharged for operating, e.g., a compressor. The vanes A are fast on a shaft 1 carrying arms 11, 12 between which is mounted a rotatable sleeve 22 connected by a pitman arm 21 to a crank-shaft 2 bearingly mounted in a rotatable cage to rotate the vanes B through the meshing of a pinion 24 carried by the crank-shaft with a fixed gear wheel 3 embracing the shaft 1. The vanes A and B are hollow and connected by ducts to a bore in the shaft 1 so that lubricant used for the bearings may be used also as a coolant for the vanes. A box-section flywheel 25 is fitted with a balance weight 13. The combustion chamber 4 is double walled to permit circulation of coolant. In a modified construction, two spark-plugs Z 1 , Z 2 , Fig. 2a are fitted, the fuel mixture being ignited alternately by the two plugs. One pair of vanes 101, Fig. 5, is fast on a hollow shaft 105 and the other pair 102 on a concentric hollow shaft 106. The shafts are inter-connected through the engagement of pinions 109, 109<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, with a fixed ring gear 111 and elleptical gearing 112, 112<SP>1</SP>, 113 mounted in a box section flywheel 107. Screws 115 and arcuate slots 114 in the gear ring 111 permit adjustment of the setting of one pair of vanes with respect to the other pair.
