Abstract
746,350. Rotary internal combustion engines. BERRISFORD, W. C. Sept. 6, 1954 [July 16, 1954], No. 20747/54. Class 110(2) In a rotary internal combustion engine of the intermittent abutment type the vanes rotate in a contra-rotating cylinder 22 which rotates at half the speed of the vanes. The cylinder is mounted on a sleeve 44 which is fast with a sprocket wheel 45 and is journalled in bearings 32, 47, 50. The wheel 45 is driven from the output shaft 27 through a gear and chain drive 52, 53. 54, 56 ... 60. Fast on the shaft 27 is a sun gear 62 which engages four planet gears, two of which 63, 64 are driven whilst the other two 65 (see Figs. 4, 5 and 6, not shown), are idle ones. The vane shafts 15 14 drive members 68, 69 respectively which are each provided with a radial slot to receive a pin 70, 71 fast with the planet gears 63, 64. The planet gears engage a stationary annulus 73. The arrangement is such that there are eight firing strokes for each revolution of the rotor and the shafts 14. 15 are held stationary in succession whilst the other shaft 15, 14 is driven through ninety degrees. Oil is pumped through passages 25, 26, 28 to a journal bearing 29 and is returned to the sump 33 through a passage 31 and the journal bearings 32. The engine is provided with an inlet port 19, an exhaust port 18 and a sparking plug 34 as shown; the supply line 35 for the sparking plug terminating in a shoe 36 which slidingly co-acts with a ring 37 carried by the cylinder.
