615.193. Twisting threads. AMERICAN THREAD CO. Aug. 2, 1946. No. 23135. Convention date, Sept. 21, 1945. [Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii)] Multiple-ply twisted threads, cords, twines and the like of high tensile strength are made of cellulose fibres by feeding the individual plies at a predetermined speed, increasing the speed of feeding at a subsequent point in the travel of the plies so as to produce equal and uniform stretching, twisting the stretched plies together to form the thread and stretching the thread. As shown, plies 11 are drawn from rods 10, through a bath R of water or sizing material, between retaining rollers 18, 19, through a spreader 20 and condenser 21 to a flyer-type twisting head 22. The plies pass through a hollow spindle 28, are twisted together, and pass around grooved capstans 40, 41 which are tapered so as to stretch the thread before it is wound on a bobbin 23. Spindle 28 and yoke 32 carrying flyer arms 44, 45 are driven by a gear 29, and the capstan spindles carry planet wheels engaging with a pinion rigidly attached to a second driving gear 33. Gears 29, 33 are rotated at different speeds through idler gears 50, 51, drive gears 52, 53, bevel gears 54, 55 and change gears 56. 57. Drive is conveyed from a motor 64 to gears 57, 56 and thence via change gears 61, 60 to roller 18 which is driven at such a speed that the individual plies 11 are stretched between rollers 18, 19 and the twisting head, preferably by 2-3¢ per cent. A stretch of about 6.4 per cent may be applied to the thread at the capstans 40, 41; the combined stretch in the plies and in the twisted thread is preferably about 8¢-10 per cent.
