Abstract

615,139. Clocks. BOXWELL, C. F. N. July 29, 1946, No. 22456. [Class 139] A clock regulated or controlled by a conical pendulum in which the pendulum bob is restricted to a predetermined circular path by stabilizing its circumferential velocity by frictional interaction between the bob and an annular control ring placed in the horizontal plane of movement of the centre of the bob. As shown in Fig. 1, the pendulum bob P is formed with an annular groove in which are provided soft brush hairs, not shown, which frictionally engage the surface of the annular control ring C and cause dissipation of any surplus energy to restrict the bob to its predetermined path. The foot of the pendulum engages a rotor bar R driven by wheelwork W which drives the hands over an inclined dial D. The pendulum bob may have a permanent magnet core M, Fig. 4, which carries two cylindrical members P, P, of magnetic material provided with opposed pole-pieces which magnetically co-operate with the annular control ring C, Fig. 5 to induce therein friction in the form of eddy currents and so dissipate any surplus energy and restrict the bob to its predetermined path. The pendulum is mounted at the top in such a way as to provide temperature compensation.
