Abstract

1,076,606. Clocks and watches. G. P. DEGON. July 1, 1964 [July 1, 1963; Oct. 24, 1963; June 30, 1964], No. 27251/64. Heading G3T. [Also in Division H2] The electromagnetically driven self-sustaining timekeeping balance device is particularly suitable for driving recording apparatus of the kind using a paper strip and where relatively more power is required than in ordinary timepieces. The device comprises a disc 1 of insulating material on the balance staff 2 carrying two circular coils 3, 4 diametrically opposite. On opposite sides of this disc are two annular magnetic members 11, 12 each having four poles diametrically opposed in pairs each pole of one member being opposite an opposite pole of the other member. The disc is restrained toward a zero position by a spring and is supplied with current over a fraction of the angle of oscillation through moving and fixed contacts 7, 8. The arrangement is such that as the repulsion owing to one set of magnet poles decreases so the attraction owing to the other set increases. In a modification the balance carries an additional flywheel mass (34) Fig. 12 (not shown) which is magnetically screened at (35). A drive may be taken off the balance by ratchet means in one or both directions of oscillation. The magnets may be movable and the coils fixed.
