614,672. Etching; printing - surfaces. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. July 19, 1946, No. 21636. Convention date, March 13, 1944. [Class 100(ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Aluminium surfaces are etched to form printing-surfaces, &c. by a solution containing a hydroxide of barium or strontium. A solution of strength 0.5 per cent to saturation is used, preferably of 1 to 5 per cent, and the etching is effected at a temperature less than 170‹F., preferably from 90‹F. to 130‹F. To the etching fluid may be added from 1 to 10 per cent by weight of glycerines, glycols, sugars, or an amine such as urea, ammonium hydroxide, triethanolamine or morpholine. The resist used may be light sensitive, and the aluminium may be treated to form an oxide coating before being etched. A printing- plate prepared as above may be protected by an oxide coating, or by an electrodeposited film of metal such as nickel or chromium.
