Abstract

496,613. Etching. ALUMINUM COLORS, Inc. Nov. 30, 1937, No. 33054. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1936. [Class 100 (ii)] An aluminium surface containng less than 0'05 per cent copper is etched to produce a reflecting surface free from streaks, by treating in a hot solution of an alkali, preferably sodium hydroxide, in which is dissolved a compound of copper, lead, or cobalt. The etching is continued for from 5-10 minutes at a temperature of 140 to 170‹ F., or, when a lead compound is used, at a temperature of about 100‹ F., until a dark deposit is formed on the aluminium, the deposit being removed with a solvent such as dilute nitric acid. A substance capable of maintaining the copper or cobalt compound in solution may be added ; ammonium hydroxide, glycerine, cane sugar, or sodium-potassium tartrate may be used for this purpose.
