[Class 74(ii)] A yarn tensioning device having a spring or spring biassed arm provided at one end with a yarn guiding eyelet is provided with braking means to prevent the arm overrunning and slackening of the yarn, in the event of an abrupt take-up of the yarn. The arm 4, is secured to an arm 8 pivoted on a spindle 9 fixed on a bracket 1 of the machine and a pawl 12, mounted on the arm 8, is adapted to engage a ratchet wheel 13 rotatably mounted on the spindle 9. Rotation of the ratchet wheel 13 is resisted by a spring 15 pressing against the side face of the wheel. The yarn passes from between discs 17, and through the eye 5 of the lever 4, any sudden pull on the yarn swinging the arm 4, and causing the pawl 12 to rotate the ratchet wheel 13 against the braking effect of the spring 15, so that overrunning of the arm 4 is prevented. When the tension in the yarn is relieved, the arm 4, is raised under the action of the spring 10, and the pawl 12 slides over the ratchet wheel 13. Alternatively, the wheel 13 may be combined with a brake shoe, or a band, or with braking members providing axially opposed braking surfaces, or the braking arrangement may include co-operating separate members controlled by a member connected with the tensioning member.
