Abstract

614,379. Catamenial tampons. McLAUGHLIN, J. R. July 13, 1946. No. 21021. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A cutting apparatus which is especially adapted to sever the string connections z between cotton catamenial wads x as they pass from a sewing machine to a forming machine for completing the making of the wads, is constructed so that the operation of the cutter is controlled by passage of the wads through feed rollers. From the sewing-machine the chain of wads passes to a driven corrugated feed roller 40 mounted between side plates C, C<1> provided with guides 11 for the wads, and a plain roller 42 coacting with roller 40 is mounted in arms 44 fixed to a shaft 28 upon which is freely mounted a pulley 25 forming part of a conveying means for feeding the cut wads to a conveyer 12 leading to the forming machine. A belt 26 pulley 24, rising and falling pressing rollers 36 and a tensioning- roller 30 complete the conveying means, and between these and feed rollers 40, 42 the normally stationary cutting rollers 48, 49 are arranged, the roller 49 having a cut-away part to admit passage of the wad x as shown in Fig. 9 and being fitted with a knife 51 held by a clamp 54 to a sectional part 52. When the arms 44 are raised by passage of a wad between the rollers 40, 42 an arm 81, Fig. 6, is moved clockwise to depress a switch which energizes an electromagnet' 64, and this causes clockwise rotation of a lever arm 65 and a clutch 72 is thrown in to cause rotation of the shaft 47 of the cutting roller 48 and its associated roller 49. The wad is flattened while being cut, and the chain is maintained taut by the greater speed of the belt 26. The cut effected is, as shown in Fig. 10, near the end of a wad x. The magnet 64 is maintained in energized condition by an arm 60 freely mounted on shaft 28 but operated by a cam 57 on shaft 47 to maintain the clutch 72 in action until the cutting rollers have completed one revolution when a depressed part of the cam permits a counterclockwise movement of the arm 60.
