614,338. Sewing-machines. McLAUGHLIN, J. R. June 14, 1946, No. 19040. [Class 112] In a machine for producing catamenial tampons with string or like tails by sewing a continuous chain of stitches along a series of spaced pads of absorbent material, severing the chain of stitches close to one end of each pad, and then compressing the pads into the required final form, the pads are fed past the sewing- machine 28 by rubber belts 49 carried by wheels 43, 44 on a frame 34 which is pivoted on the spindle of the wheels 43 and is lifted and lowered in synchronism with the compressing device by a chain or cable 24 connected to a lever actuated by a cam,in the compressing device so that the pads are suitably spaced. The frame 34 is readily detachable from its pivoting spindle when the belts 49 are removed from their pulleys, to facilitate threading of the sewing-machine needle. Cutting.-The series of interconnected pads passes from the sewing machine between guides 61 to a series of rollers and conveyer belts driven by the same means as the sewing-machine feed, one of these rollers 99 having a part cut away to receive a cutting blade 103 for severing the stitch-chain connecting successive pads close to the end of one of the pads. The conveyers then deliver the pads to the compressing device. Specifications 614,378 and 614,379, [both in Group VI], are referred to.
