[Class 100(i)] [Also in Groups XIX and XL(b)] In a machine for cutting webs of paper into sheets and stacking the sheets, electrical mechanism is used to count the sheets and to actuate a feeding means for feeding a marker between the sheets after a predetermined number of sheets have been counted. The paper 3 is fed by rollers 1, 2; 5, 6, Fig. 3, to a cutter comprising a fixed blade 9 and rotating blade 10, which effects one cut for each rotation of a shaft 16, Fig. 2. A cam on shaft 16 closes a switch 17 at each revolution and thus operates the electrical counting mechanism, (see Group XIX), or the counter may be actuated under the control of a photoelectric cell actuated by the interruption of a beam of light by the passage of a severed sheet. When the required number of sheets have been cut, a switch 51 is closed and an electro-magnet is energized causing its core to operate a rod 91 which causes counter-clockwise movement of a lever 81 and thus brings a feed roll 83 into contact with a roller 96 which is driven continuously at a speed slightly greater than the speed of the web 3. The roll 83 receives marking material fed from a roll 67 mounted on a spool 68, and passing over rolls 74, 75 mounted on a lever 76. An adjustably mounted feed band 88 passes over the roll 83 and directs the web to rollers 86, 87, which direct the web to the cutters 9, 10. The roller 86 has a convex periphery and the roller 87 a concave one. As the roll 96 moves faster than the web 3, the sheet cut from it extends beyond the other cut sheets and so serves as a marker. The roll spool is normally held by a brake which is released at each energization of the electro-magnet which throws in the feed of the marking strip.
