Abstract

614,310. Rotary valves. PADDON, W. April 24, 1945, No. 10298. [Class 135] A hydraulic control valve for regulating the feed of machine tools comprises a rotary disc or like member 8 with a circular series of metering orifices 9 of progressively differing crosssectional area held in engagement with a sealing washer 10 in the end of a cylindrical bore 1 in the valve casing by a spring 17a. The bore has a lateral inlet 18 communicating with a second bore 2 containing a filter 3 of wire gauze which can be renewed by removing a screw plug 4. The bore 1 also has an outlet 7 coinciding with apertures 12, 13 in the washer 10 and a further washer 11 respectively, the desired metering orifice 9 being brought into register with these apertures by the rotation of a spindle 14 passing through a gland or cover 15 and carrying a hand wheel 16 with peripheral markings read in conjunction with a fixed pointer 17. A spring-pressed locating ball or pin may engage notches in the edge of the valve disc. As applied to the cutter of a cylinder boring machine, the outlet 7 is connected to a sump and the inlet 6 of the bore 2 is connected to a cylinder containing a ram or piston which supports the cutter head. The hydraulic control valve may thus be set to control the rate of leak from the column of liquid supporting the cutter head. In a modification, the bore 2 is dispensed with and the filter is arranged in the bore 1 behind the washer 11. In a further modification, the washers and the valve member are conical.
