Abstract

844,913. Rotary tool heads. SWINDON TOOL CO. Ltd. Feb. 12, 1959 [June 11, 1958], No. 18689/58. Class 83 (3). In a rotary tool head for facing, boring &c., the tool slide is radially fed by a closed-circuit hydraulic system within the head, the rate of flow of the fluid being controlled to regulate the speed of the feed, and the extent of the feed being controlled by an adjustable stop. A bore 7 in the cylindrical body 1, Fig. 3, is connected to a bore 5 in the tool slide 3 by passages 10- 12. With a manually operated valve 14 closed, oil is introduced into bore 7 through passage 10, which is then plugged at 13, the piston 8 being thereby moved to the left to compress the spring 9. When the valve 14 is opened, the spring 9 moves the piston 8 to the right in Fig. 3, and forces the oil into the bore 5, thus moving the tool slide 3 radially outwards. The knob 15 of valve 14 is graduated to predetermine the feed rate of the slide 3. The slide is returned to its central position by a manually rotated pinion 17, Fig. 1, co-operating with a rack 18 on the slide 3. To limit the outward feed of the tool slide 3, the stroke of the piston 8 is adjusted by rotating a graduated head 26 on a sleeve 21 having slots 22 engaging lugs 23 on a nut 24, screwing on a stem 25 of the piston, this nut engaging a collar 27 on the sleeve to prevent further movement of the piston. A by-pass valve 20a between the bores 5, 7 relieves the pressure in bore 5 when the slide 3 is moved by the rack and pinion.
