Abstract
614,233. Internal-combustion engine cooling systems. EVANS PRODUCTS CO. Jan. 14, 1946, No. 1283. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1945. [Class 64(iii)] In a cooling system for internal-combustion engines employing a thermostatically controlled variable pitch fanblade assembly in which the blades are tilted in response to temperature variations of the cooling liquid by a longitudinally movable shaft operated by a thermostat, the assembly is mounted between the radiator and the engine block on a hollow casing which is attached externally to the engine block and through which the cooling liquid flows or is by-passed over the thermostat contained therein. The cooling system comprises a cylinder block 10, radiator 11, impeller 13, cooling water connecting tubes 12, 18, by-pass tubes 14, 17 and fan blade assembly F which is of the type described in Specification 610,063, [Group XXVI]. A hollow casing 15 supported on a boss on the engine block is interposed between the tubes 14, 17 and contains the thermostat 42 which operates the fan assembly through the shaft 40. The assembly is attached to the chamber 15 by a sleeve 22 having integral therewith a shoulder 21 and plate 20 and is driven by a sheave 27 screwed to a hub 23 rotating on the sleeve 22. In a modification (Fig. 3 not shown) the thermostat is arranged in a cavity in the pump impeller which is mounted on the same shaft as the assembly and through which the main stream of cooling liquid flows.
