Abstract
Metal surfaces are protected against corrosion by applying thereto an acid solution stable to light, having a pH of 3.5 or more composed of gelatine or other animal glue and a tanning agent chosen from the group consisting of chromates or dichromates of metals, the hydroxides of which are insoluble in water, the gelatine being rendered insoluble by decreasing the pH figure of the admixture. The pH may be reduced by evaporating off the water or by the presence of acid ions remaining after pickling of the metal. Specified tanning agents are manganese and/or zinc dichromates. Preferred proportions are from 0.1 to 2 per cent gelatin and 1 to 10 per cent manganese and/or zinc dichromates. Auxiliary substances e.g. wetting agents such as sulphoricinoleic acid, plasticizers such as glycerine and colouring agents may also be present. Several treatments may be used and a layer of paint may be applied as an overcoat.
