Abstract
612,894. Decorating glass. JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., and WYNN, N. June 5, 1946, No. 17080. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] A design is produced on a transparent heatresisting base in simulation of stained glass by applying by the silk screen printing method an opaque coating of vitrifiable enamel to cover the portions corresponding to the outline, the glass joints, the leaded lines, and other opaque areas if required, drying, applying a transparent or translucent coating of liquid lustre of the required colour to the remaining portions, and finally firing. The enamel may consist of a lead borosilicate or lead alkali metal borosilicate flux coloured by metal oxides, and applied as a paste with e.g. a cellulose compound and amyl lactate. The liquid lustre which may be applied by painting or spraying may consist of a solution of the resinate or sulphoresinate of iron, titanium, bismuth, tin, zinc, &c., to which may be added the sulphoresinates of precious metals with essential oils, aromatic alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons as solvent. The base is finally fired at between 500‹ and 600‹ C. and may be additionally fired before the liquid lustre is applied. A diffused effect may be obtained by firing a thin layer of a transparent enamel containing a small proportion of an opacifying pigment on to the untreated side of the base, which may be covered on one oi both sides by a protective undecorated sheet. A single panel may form the window or a series of panels may be assembled together in a framework.
