Abstract

925,171. Colouring glass sheets. TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO. Ltd., and A. C. WAINE, and H. CHEDGZOY. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 18, 1958], No. 29975/58. Class 56. To impart colour to sheet glass, the area to be coloured is coated with a solution of either pyridine tribromo gold or dibenzyl sulphide monobromo gold in an organic solvent and the glass heated sufficiently to develop a transparent colour film. The heating step may be during the heating before chilling in tempering the glass or during bending. The coating may be effected by a spray gun and may be gradated to reduce the light to 30% at the most dense shading to nothing. The sheets may be used for vehicle window glasses and in the implosion guards for television receivers. To modify the colours, small amounts of organo-compounds of metals other than gold may be added, specifically nickel or iron to give green or purple tints. Bismuth compounds may be added to assist adhesion. Solvents suggested are trichlorethylene and terpineol. Two specific examples are given. Specification 729,734 is referred to.
