[Class 38 (v)] In an arrangement for protecting transmission lines in signalling systems against high currents, the leads 11, 11<1> are normally connected through two contact arms 4, 41, fixed contacts 8, 81 and resistances 3, 31 to the telephone exchange or subscriber's substation 10, a permanent magnet 6 attracting the armature 1 so that the arms 4, 4<1> engage the contacts 8, 8<1>. On a sustained high current, one or both of the resistances 3, 3<1> are heated, the armature 1 passes its Curie point, ceases to be ferromagnetic and is released so that the contacts 4, 4<1> leave the contacts 8, 81 and engage an earthing contact 9, whereby the lines 11, 11<1> are disconnected from the exchange 10 and connected to earth. Spark-gaps 12, 121 may also be provided. When overload disappears, magnet re-attracts the armature.
