Abstract
A liquid composition which, with the addition of water, may be used for fire-proofing or as a binder comprises an alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy silicane, e.g. ethyl, butyl or cresyl silicates and up to 5 per cent of an organic base having a pH value greater than 7, but not greater than that of piperidine, such as ethanolamine, cyclohexylamine or dicyclohexylamine, but not piperidine or morpholine. The organic base may be added to the silicyl ester at any stage before gelation. The silicyl ester may be partially hydrolysed by less than 1 1/2 molecules of water per molecule of ester, the water being present in the ester or in the alcohol from which the ester was made. Specification 575,752 is referred to.ALSO:An alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy silicane, e.g. ethyl, butyl or cresyl silicate may be partially hydrolysed by less than 1 1/2 molecules of water per molecule of ester, the water being present in the ester or in the alcohol from which the ester was made.
