Abstract

An elastomer-forming composition comprises (1) an essentially diorganopolysiloxane having a viscosity of at least 500 cs. at 25 DEG C., and wherein the organic radicals are selected from monovalent hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated), perfluoroalkylethyl, haloaryl and haloalkaryl radicals, (2) a reinforcing silica filler having a surface area of at least 50 m2/g., and (3) sufficient added water to overcome the tendency for the structure-building interaction between (1) and (2). The water can be added as a liquid, as a condensing vapour, or as vapour in an atmosphere of high humidity, or it can be present when the siloxane is used in the form of an aqueous emulsion. The compositions may also contain conventional fillers and additives, and may be heat-cured with organic peroxides, sulphur, organosulphur compounds, cyanoguanidine as described in Specification 959,525, or with urea, as described in Specification 990,906, or by the methods that cure at room temperature. The compositions may be stored in sealed containers or exposed to 100% humidity. In a typical Example (1), a methylsiloxane gum and fume silica were mixed together on a two-roll rubber mill, while water was added dropwise until the mixture was smooth and soft.
